The challenge

The City of Morro Bay needed to replace its aging coastal wastewater treatment plant while also addressing long-term water supply challenges. The new facility would treat wastewater to advanced purification standards so the water could be returned to the Morro Valley Groundwater Basin for future potable use. Meeting those goals required construction of a treatment facility incorporating membrane bioreactors, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet advanced oxidation, along with conveyance infrastructure and injection wells capable of delivering purified water into the groundwater basin.

Challenge met

An Alberici company, Filanc, constructed the water reclamation facility and the systems needed to treat wastewater and return purified water to the groundwater basin. The project included a lift station connecting the facility to the existing sewer system, screening and grit removal equipment and advanced treatment processes using membrane bioreactors, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet disinfection with hydrogen peroxide.

Alberici also installed recycled water pumping systems, pipelines and groundwater injection wells that deliver purified water to the Morro Valley Groundwater Basin. Additional infrastructure connects the facility to the existing ocean outfall for brine and wet-weather discharge. By turning wastewater into a purified water resource, the project establishes a new local supply and strengthens long-term water reliability for the Morro Bay community.
