The challenge

The Fort Gibson Dam Spillway Bridge Replacement requires removal of an aging 30-span bridge and construction of a new structure while the spillway remains fully operational. The project presents complex marine access, demolition, safety, and sequencing challenges, including fluctuating lake levels, public access near park and highway areas, environmental protection requirements, and work around active dam infrastructure. Construction must also maintain gate functionality, with no more than three gates offline at one time.

Challenge met

Alberici is delivering the project with a marine-based construction approach that uses barges, tugboats, and barge-mounted cranes to move demolition debris, precast elements, and new materials to and from the structure. The team will self-perform critical-path scopes, including demolition, steel erection, precast installation, cast-in-place concrete, hydraulic steel structures and machinery installation, and marine support. Prefabricated precast elements and careful lift planning will help improve safety, control schedule risk, and reduce disruption to ongoing dam operations.
