Enhancing long-term grid reliability

Challenge met

Alberici is serving as general contractor for the Cedar River Generating Station in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Located adjacent to the Prairie Creek Generating Station, the project includes construction of a 94-megawatt natural gas-fired power facility designed to provide fast-ramping, dispatchable generation in support of Alliant Energy’s evolving power portfolio.

Working alongside engineer Burns & McDonnell, Alberici is constructing a facility equipped with five Wärtsilä 18V50 reciprocating internal combustion engine (RICE) units and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emissions control systems. Designed to rapidly adjust power output in response to real-time system demand, the plant will help support renewable energy integration while enhancing long-term grid reliability and resiliency.

Through detailed planning, disciplined project management and close collaboration with the owner and design team, Alberici is advancing construction while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality and schedule performance. Upon completion, the Cedar River Generating Station will provide Alliant Energy with a flexible generation resource capable of responding quickly to changing system conditions and supporting dependable electric service throughout the region.
