The challenge

As energy demand and renewable generation continue to grow across the nation, Alliant Energy required an adaptive and reliable generation solution capable of rapidly responding to fluctuations in grid demand while replacing aging combustion turbine infrastructure that had been in operation for more than 30 years.

Key Facts

94 MW generating station

5 RICE (Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engine) generators

Replaces more than 30-year-old combustion turbine infrastructure

Challenge met

The Burlington Generating Station delivers 94 MW of fast-ramping natural gas-fired generation through five Wärtsilä 18V50 RICE units equipped with SCR emissions control technology. Designed for operational flexibility, the facility can quickly respond to changing energy demands while supporting grid resiliency and complementing intermittent renewable resources such as wind and solar generation.
