Upgrading one of Ontario’s largest wastewater treatment plants while it remains operational presented a substantial challenge. The aging infrastructure and increased population demanded major improvements at the Humber Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project encompassed the replacement of secondary treatment equipment, overhaul of existing structures, and new construction.

Challenge met
Alberici adeptly addressed the challenge by meticulously planning and executing the refurbishment and replacement of key plant components. Five aeration tanks, final clarifiers, service tunnels, piping, pumps, and electrical systems were systematically replaced or upgraded. The project team worked to complete these upgrades while maintaining continuous operations throughout construction. Alberici creatively devised temporary structures and systems to sustain plant operations. The scope of work also included constructing an electrical building and an effluent pump station. As the initial phase of a larger undertaking, Alberici’s collaboration with the city and other stakeholders set the tone for multiple projects within the ten-year facility improvement plan.
