The challenge

Expanding the F.J. Horgan Water Treatment Plant by 61 million gallons per day (MGD) to meet the water demands of Toronto’s rapidly growing population posed a multifaceted challenge. Ensuring uninterrupted plant operations during construction, along with managing large-scale excavation and equipment installation, required innovative strategies.

Challenge met

Alberici managed the project’s complexities by adopting a multifaceted solution. To keep the plant operational, Alberici pivoted its approach to water pump installation. Instead of refurbishing existing pumps, the team collaboratively formulated a plan with the city to purchase new pumps, enabling smooth procurement and adherence to the construction schedule. Cognizant of community concerns, Alberici devised a comprehensive truck traffic management strategy, partnering with the city and local residents to mitigate disruption during large-scale excavation.

The project also involved intricate equipment installation, including pumps, filter media baffles, and ozone equipment. Alberici’s planning and communication strategies streamlined the process.
