The challenge

Alberici served as Construction Manager (CMA) to build this 2.5 million SF automotive manufacturing facility. In partnership with design-build lead, SSOE, Inc., Alberici managed construction of the infrastructure, building and site-work portions of the $1 billion complex, including the body and paint shops, as well as the general assembly building. Achieving LEED Platinum Certification required strict adherence to sustainable construction techniques and materials.

Challenge met

During the design phase, Alberici provided preconstruction services, collaborating with Volkswagen for detailed scope development, value engineering and budgeting. More than 50 work packages were awarded to ensure quality and cost control.

Alberici’s in-house expertise played a crucial role, aligning every aspect of project execution with LEED Platinum requirements. Our sequencing approach allowed fast-track installation of owner-supplied process equipment concurrent to construction.

Initial production capacity upon completion in 2011 equaled approximately 150,000 vehicles per year, including a new mid-size sedan designed specifically for the North American Market. The facility was awarded LEED Platinum certification in 2012, becoming the world’s first LEED Platinum automobile manufacturing plant.
