The challenge

The construction of the new SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital Medical Campus Renewal project presented a substantial challenge due to its ambitious design and construction schedule. The 602,000 SF hospital, with 294 private patient rooms, 16 operating rooms, a Level I trauma center and emergency department, large intensive care units, and multiple specialized suites, needed to be seamlessly integrated with a 200,000 SF ambulatory care center, 1000-space parking garage, and green spaces.

Moreover, the hospital’s role as a teaching facility for Saint Louis University’s School of Medicine required specific areas on each floor to support various medical disciplines, as well as spaces for medical residents and faculty to collaborate and teach.

OSHA Partnership Project

Challenge met

To achieve the aggressive design and construction schedule, Alberici adopted a collaborative Lean construction approach, driving innovation, maximizing value, minimized waste, and fostering continuous improvement. A focus on safety and efficiency was achieved through a prefabrication strategy, carefully coordinated with extensive Building Information Modeling (BIM) efforts. The standout achievement was prefabricating 297 patient bathrooms offsite and seamlessly transporting and installing them in the building. Headwalls, pump skids, and curtainwall assemblies were also prefabricated to enhance project efficiency, shaving 3 months off of the schedule and saving SSM Health $2 million in construction costs.

Recognizing the magnitude, timeline, and complexity of the project, Alberici established key partnerships to ensure its successful completion. An OSHA Partnership Agreement was implemented, allowing Alberici, OSHA, and trade partners to collaborate and instill a strong safety culture.

A collaborative Lean construction approach, strategic prefabrication, and effective partnerships resulted in the successful delivery of a world-class academic medical center that will foster a secure and innovative environment for patients, medical staff, and students at Saint Louis University.
