The challenge

Alberici led a joint venture to engineer, procure, and construct a comprehensive Air Quality Control System (AQCS) at Empire District’s Asbury Power Plant. The project aimed to significantly reduce pollutants, including sulfur dioxide, from the 198 MW coal-fired power plant’s emissions by more than 98 percent. The challenge was to implement a complex AQCS system while adhering to a tight schedule driven by commitments to regulatory bodies, shareholders, and customers.

Challenge met

The joint venture strategically tackled project complexities to achieve successful outcomes. A circulating fluid bed dry scrubber, pulse-jet fabric filter, and continuous emissions monitoring technology were integrated, enhancing emissions control. Balancing the aggressive timetable, Alberici self-performed crucial tasks like foundations, piping, steel erection, and equipment installation. To address challenging tie-in logistics beneath the existing SCR unit, the team ingeniously designed a monorail system for accessing confined spaces, allowing for ductwork installation. Time lost to a record hot summer and a harsh winter was managed through rigorous scheduling and overtime. Alberici’s meticulous planning, innovative solutions, and diligent execution resulted in completing the AQCS project ahead of schedule and under budget, ensuring compliance and environmental responsibility.
