LEED Platinum Volkswagen Chattanooga Assembly Plant industry first

Achieving an industry first

Alberici and Volkswagen made history when the two industry leaders partnered to construct the world’s first LEED Platinum manufacturing facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Alberici was selected to provide construction management for major portions of the $1 billion complex, which included greenfield construction of a general assembly plant, body shop, paint shop, training facility, and office building.

Effective management from start to finish

During the design phase, Alberici worked closely with Volkswagen and its designers to provide preconstruction services, including bid package preparation, detailed scope development, drawing reviews, value engineering, risk analysis, and budget development. Procurement included award of more than 50 individual work packages to local and national trade contractors. To help control cost and schedule during construction, Alberici self-performed installation of the mezzanine and conveyor support steel. Alberici also provided in-house sustainable consulting services to help the plant achieve its record-breaking LEED Platinum certification.

Helping achieve aggressive production milestones

To accommodate an aggressive schedule, Alberici implemented a fast-track approach that incorporated owner-supplied process equipment while the building was still under construction. Using Building Information Modeling (BIM), Alberici generated visual images and daily reviews to illustrate progress and identify opportunities for pull-ahead work. For example, once the building enclosure was partially complete, crews immediately began installing process equipment. This enabled early achievement of production milestones.
