The Olmsted Dam project is the largest civil works project undertaken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Alberici has been on site since 2004 along with joint venture partner AECOM (formerly Washington Group International) constructing the final phase of a navigational dam which passes more cargo on this stretch of river than any other dam on the nation’s inland water system.
The Olmsted team is winding down the low water season this year and has reached a number of milestones working toward achieving an operational dam in October 2018 and project completion in March 2019.
The project has completed all river foundation work, placed the last yard of concrete in the precast yard, and set the fifth and final tainter gate. Remaining work includes placement of the final pre-cast “shell” on the river bottom, setting of two precast service bridges, completion of the left boat abutment, installation of permanent power and controls, testing and start-up of tainter gates, flushing of the culverts and miter gate repair of the landside lock chamber, partial demolition of upstream lock and dam 53, installation of four upstream mooring cells, and demobilization and site restoration.
