This week marks Women in Construction Week, sponsored by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). In honor of the occasion, we asked Tammy Swyers, a Project Administrator III, to share her story.
¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de su puesto actual?
My current role on the new Rte 47 Washington Missouri River Bridge is very exciting and yet challenging at times. We are dealing with flooding, high winds, cold and these are all challenges we must work around. There are a lot of moving pieces and you have to be able to maneuver around them quickly.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Working on a joint venture project was a big challenge. I had to adapt to another contractor’s management and work style and learn their payroll and accounting systems in a timely manner.
¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de trabajar en el sector de la construcción?
I enjoy working on different projects and watching the phases of the project come together. I’m proud of our trades and the skills they bring to the project. It really is a joint effort for management and the trades to work together to build these projects.
My advice for women entering the construction industry.
I would say to women entering construction today that they are an integral part in the industry. To stay strong and don’t give up, don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn.Knowledge is power.
