Alberici, with a JV partner, is the design-builder of a new residential and skilled nursing facility for the Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy. Project challenges include minimizing disruption to the existing campus, while updating the historic campus that has been operational since 1886. The $240 million project consist of a new 210-bed, 261,000 SF skilled nursing facility 80-bed, 74,000 SF independent living building, and renovation of an existing campus dining facility. The project also includes demolition of seven existing structures, as well as upgrades to existing buildings, infrastructure, utilities, hardscaping and landscaping to support the new facilities and campus.

Challenge met
Alberici’s team devised comprehensive solutions to address project challenges. Personalized attention, communication with the VA, and thoughtful planning were employed to minimize disruption and ensure safety and well-being of the residents. The team implemented a phased schedule for utility upgrades, ensuring continued services and proactive communication with the community. Considering the longevity of the existing utilities, extensive investigations were conducted to verify the impact of closing valves and shutting off parts of the system before a complete outage. Moreover, the team has utilized the existing utility tunnels on campus to upgrade systems to minimize disturbances to the campus landscape and resident’s right of way.
Alberici’s focus on safety, effective communication, and strategic planning has ensured that the construction process has minimized impacts while enhancing the Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy’s facilities to provide the highest standard of care to veterans and their spouses.
