Hey! I am Emily Myatt. I will be a senior this fall at the University of Mississippi majoring in Civil Engineering. I grew up in Belleville, Illinois.
This summer, I was placed on the Salina Water Treatment Plant in Salina, Kansas working with CAS Constructors. At first, I was nervous about being placed on a project in a new city working for a new company without knowing anyone. When I was telling my family about my nerves, I was given some of the best advice I have ever heard. “You do your most growing when you are uncomfortable.” This statement has been 100% true! Even though I was anxious about not knowing anyone in my new town, it has been an exciting summer. I have learned and experienced so many new things, and everyone I have worked with or met has been extremely welcoming and encouraging. I have developed new skills and been able to see a different side of the industry than I had been exposed to through classes and other internships. Outside of my internship, I have spent time hiking and running, reading, watching Netflix, and visiting friends and family.
Through my internship, I have been able to see two other treatment plants. I was able to visit the site of a new Water Treatment Plant in Gardner, Kansas. It was interesting to see a similar project to the one I am working on at a completely different stage in the construction process. The Emporia Water Plant is a few months behind ours, so it was really helpful to compare the different structures on site. I was also able to tour an operational Wastewater Treatment Plant in Emporia, Kansas. This was my first time visiting a Wastewater Treatment plant, so I learned a lot!
