Under a design-build contract, an Alberici joint venture delivered a new automotive component plant for Y-Tec Keylex Mexico (YKM) that produces motor vehicle parts and accessories for Mazda. The 317,500-square-foot manufacturing facility consists of a press plant, general assembly plant, paint shop and administration building.
Alberici operated within a tight budget and an accelerated 12-month construction schedule to meet already-committed production requirements. The team overcame adverse weather and soil conditions through creative sequencing of materials and equipment as well as effective labor management strategies. Despite these challenges, the project recorded more than 900,000 labor hours without a lost time injury.
The project team included members from Japan, Mexico and the United States. Construction Documents and meetings were presented in three languages, with multi-lingual project team members assisting with translation. To meet YKM’s design objectives, design and engineering followed international standards, while taking into consideration construction approaches and practices in Mexico.
The joint venture, Kajima|Alberici MX, consisted of The Austin Company, a subsidiary of the Kajima USA Group family of companies, and Alberici Construcciones S.A. de C.V.
Engineering News Record (ENR) selected the project as a Merit Award winner in the Manufacturing category as part of their 2013 Global Best Projects Awards.
