The Sabetha Community Hospital was first built over 90 years ago in 1913. The last major addition was made in the 1920s. It was time for an update. But because of a tight budget, any type of modernization was almost impossible until Alberici Constructors was the one to come up with a solution.
In early 2001, an agreement was reached between Sabetha and Alberici’s Design-Build Healthcare Division to proceed with design development and engineering for the addition. The new structure was designed by Alberici Design-Build Healthcare. The Lawrence Group, a St.Louis-based architectural firm, coordinated the production drawings and provided interior design services for the Alberici design-build team. After two years of planning, Alberici broke ground on April 5, 2002.
Sabetha’s addition connects to the original hospital through public and service corridors. The existing hospital, a three-story structure built in 1913 and remodeled in the 1920s, supports functions such as administration, medical records, dietary, rehab services and the specialty outpatient clinics. The new building contains patient diagnostic services such as radiology, laboratories, CT scanning, a surgery/recovery room and 19 beds, two of which are labor/delivery suites. Built into the design are future options, which could someday, house all the support functions now located in the old hospital.
Sabetha voters approved a general obligation bond issue on August 21, 2001 to help finance the new addition. The Hospital also raised $1 million needed for new equipment by soliciting donations.
The only real concern during the project was not having a pre-established relationship with the subcontractors making it difficult to know the quality of work subcontractors would be able to provide. However, the subcontractors proved to be more than adequate as the project finished on schedule and under budget. The owners were completely satisfied with the work of Alberici. In fact, their recommendation helped us win the award for the project at the Chicot Memorial Hospital in Lake Village, Arkansas.
