Minute Maid - New Warehouse

ACL, together with SSOE and Vanderwesten & Rutherford, were selected as the design-build team for the expansion of the Peterborough Facility for The Minute Maid Company Canada, Inc, a division of Coca-Cola, Ltd.  The $18.1 million project consisted of two phases: the construction of a finished goods warehouse and the relocation of a chilled manufacturing line from Mississauga.

The 85,000 SF warehouse had two major storage areas.  One was the 30,000 SF chilled storage space for juice goods designed to operate just above 0?C.  It is important that freezing does not occur in this area; thus temperature is continuously monitored and tied to an alarm system.  The other section was the 40,000 SF frozen finish goods space that is maintained at a temperature of -20?C. Cooling is provided by forced air systems, moving over ammonia based evaporators located in two penthouses.

The warehouse has a clear height of 26' and is constructed of a structural steel frame, erected by Alberici surrounded by insulated metal panels.  The R-40 rated roof of the warehouse also serves as the ceiling for these cold areas. Heat recovered from the ammonia refrigeration system was used for under slab heating in the frozen warehouse area.  The facility also included an ESFR sprinkler system throughout.

The support area for this facility included offices, locker rooms, restrooms, cafeteria and trucker waiting area.

The fact that the foundations began in October and the structural steel was erected through November and December gives one a clear indication of the weather challenges presented to maintain schedule.  The team was able to pour concrete throughout the winter months and completed the last freezer slab pour the first week of March.

Coca-Cola was pleased to have the facility completed by early May.  This project had a tight schedule and budget, and Coca-Cola appreciated how Alberici's team approach assured these project goals were met.
