City of Atlanta - Chattahoochee / Hemphill Water Treatment Plants, Phase II Various Improvements

Chattahoochee Water Treatment Plant: 65.9 mgd capacity

Hemphill Water Treatment Plant: 136.5 mgd capacity

The Chattahoochee and Hemphill Water Treatment Plants, named for Mayor William Hemphill who in 1891 designated the Chattahoochee as the river source for Atlanta’s water, currently process 100% of Atlanta’s drinking water.   In addition to the two treatment plants, the treatment facilities include a river intake facility, 340 mgd pumping station, two reservoirs with storage capacities of 180 mg and 345 mg, and two settled solid facilities that process all solid waste from the treatment plants. The City’s Load Control Center uses state-of-the-art computer systems to monitor and control the systems.

The Chattahoochee Hemphill WTP’s Various Improvements project addresses a variety of activities at the two complexes, including

  • Cleaning, inspecting and renovation of filters
