Ameren Energy Generating - WFGD Installation for Units 1 & 2

When Ameren came to an agreement with the state of Illinois to significantly reduce mercury,
sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions beginning in 2009, they needed a
construction partner who had the capability and expertise to make their goal a reality. Serving as a
member of the Allied Power Systems (APS) consortium, Alberici Constructors is working in
conjunction with MC Industrial, Graycor and Sachs Electric to complete Ameren’s 10-year $3.5
billion environmental program.

At Coffeen, Alberici is installing two new wet flue gas desulphurization (WFGD) scrubber systems.
Ameren partnered with Hitachi to provide the scrubber systems. Alberici’s work comprises:
  • Construction of two new 78’ by 110’ feet absorber buildings
  • Installation of a new precipitator
  • Fabrication and erection of ductwork up to 200 tons a piece
  • Construction of a new reagent preparation building

WFGD systems are responsible for “scrubbing” harmful pollutants from the plant’s exhaust after
use in the coal-fired boiler. The WFGD processes the flue gas and removes many of the most
harmful contaminates. Using Hitachi technology, pollutants that are thought to contribute to “acid
rain” are significantly reduced up to 90%.

For the Coffeen project, Alberici is self-performing ductwork fabrication and erection,
structural steel fabrication and erection and concrete. Hillsdale Fabricators fabricated 7,500
tons of steel for the project to date. Manpower is expected to peak at around 750 with an office
staff of 34.

The scope of the scrubber project requires a massive amount of equipment to lift and set the
large sections of ductwork. Alberici equipment on-site includes a 900 ton lift ringer crane, 2250, a
4100 ringer and another on tracks, a 120 crawler, 999 crawler and 6 cherry-pickers. 90% of the equipment is
Alberici owned, with only the 4100 ringer rented.
