City of Fargo Awards Water Treatment Plant Expansion to Alberici

03.05.2015
ST. LOUIS - Alberici Constructors, Inc. has been awarded a major contract by the City of Fargo, N.D. to construct an expansion of the rapidly growing city’s water treatment plant. The $104 million project will increase overall capacity from 30 million gallons per day (MGD) to 45 MGD and help the plant handle future water quality and quantity issues that may arise as a result of the city’s growth.

After initial bids all exceeded the City’s budget in 2014, Alberici was contacted by the engineer, AE2S, to provide design suggestions to reduce the overall cost of the project by $13 million. Among those suggestions was a significant redesign of the foundation, which alone provides more than $4 million in savings.

Details of the project include a new, 15-MGD advanced membrane treatment plant and several improvements to the existing plant. In addition to advanced membrane technology, the project will feature installation of reverse osmosis (RO) technology and modifications to the plant’s chemical feed and storage systems. The upgrades are designed to help purify drinking water to the highest standards by removing a variety of impurities, including sulfate and bromide concentrations from the nearby Sheyenne River.

Alberici is responsible for all general construction, including all process equipment and pumps, installation of auger cast piles, poured-in-place concrete foundations, and concrete masonry unit (CMU) superstructures. Alberici is also managing mechanical and electrical contracts, which were awarded separately to specialty contractors Wrigley Mechanical and JDP Electric.

All additions and upgrades during the three-year project will be constructed while the existing plant is in full operation. Alberici plans to carefully sequence work without interrupting existing treatment processes.
“We look forward to working with the City of Fargo on this critical infrastructure project,” said Mike Burke, executive vice president of Alberici’s water/wastewater division. “Our wealth of expertise in the construction of similar facilities will help continue to control costs and ensure that the project is constructed safely, on-time and with highest level of quality for the citizens of Fargo.”

As an industry leader in the construction of municipal water and wastewater facilities throughout North America, Alberici has extensive experience constructing projects in cold weather conditions. The Fargo Membrane WTP project is Alberici’s second large-scale project in North Dakota since 2010.
